Living in Bottelier Curaçao

Bottelier is a peaceful neighborhood featuring a mix of modern and traditional architecture. Located on a hill, many homes enjoy stunning views of the Lagun Jan Thiel area. The cool island breeze is ever-present at this elevation, adding to the comfort and charm of living here. Residents appreciate the neighborhood’s calm ambiance and proximity to both city and nature.

Natural Environment

Between Seaquarium Beach and Jan Thiel lie the famous Jan Thiel Salt Pans: a scenic nature reserve perfect for walking, running, horseback riding, or mountain biking. Visitors can often spot flamingos on the salt lake, along with a variety of birds and blooming flowers during the rainy season. It’s one of the island’s most beautiful outdoor areas for relaxation and recreation.

The History of Bottelier Curaçao

Like many neighborhoods on Curaçao, Bottelier was once a plantation. In the 19th century, Bottelier covered about 60 hectares, making it one of the smaller plantations on the island. It was also known as Plantation "Lange Tuyn." Bottelier was unique for using plows to cultivate the land, a modern innovation at the time, rather than relying solely on manual labor. This made it one of the most progressive plantations of its era. Some of the original gables of the Bottelier country house can still be seen today, though much of the structure has been renovated over the years.
